An operator shows in a video how suitcases are stored on an airplane.

We know that suitcases are transported in the hold of an airplane, but you’ve probably never seen how it’s done.

A worker of an undetermined airline has shown on TikTok how suitcases are stored in the hold of an airplane. The video has gone viral because it’s so curious. And it takes a lot more work than it looks.

When we go to catch a plane, we can take with us the hand luggage, which we store on a shelf, on top of the seat.

But large suitcases go in the hold. When we hand them over at the reception desk, we forget about them and pick them up at the destination. But how are suitcases stored in the hold of an airplane? Our colleague Carlos Galán from Business Insider, has found a curious video that shows us.

Inside the belly of the plane

In an aircraft, weight is money wasted. The heavier the aircraft the more fuel you have to spend. So the size of the aircraft is adjusted to the minimum possible. An empty space is wasted money.

That’s why the aircraft holds are narrow and have just enough space to fit the suitcases. It is not an easy task for the operators. Perhaps the most curious thing is that we did not imagine that the floor of the plane’s hold was circular, even though that is the shape of its belly.

As we can see, the belly of the plane is a very narrow and low place, where you can’t stand up. The operator has to enter on his knees, or crouched down.

A portable conveyor belt with rollers carries the suitcases to the back of the warehouse. There the worker, as in a game of Tetris, places the suitcases one on top of the other, leaving no gaps, since the space is small. Also, if they are well placed, they will not fall when the plane makes a sudden movement.

As the hold fills up, the roller conveyor belt is retracted. As the worker himself confesses in the comments of the video, there are days when he has had to place 200 suitcases in a single hold.

Once at the destination, getting them out of the hold is even more complicated, because they have to be picked up one by one and placed on the roller conveyor. It’s hard work, and it’s surprising that it’s completely manual.

As you can see, placing and removing suitcases from the hold of an airplane is not an easy task, and it takes quite a while. Now when you wait on the airport conveyor belt to pick up your luggage, you will see it with different eyes if it takes longer than you want it to arrive…
